[ ...oh. The very place he was kind of hoping they could hang. So tempted to ask if she has a roommate or a room to herself. ]

[ Oh but then a few seconds later: ]

[WELL THEN. Claire hears those footsteps into her room, and smiles to herself as she gets the pancakes ready. No chocolate chips this time, just pancakes and syrup, and two big glasses of milk. Because why not?
In proper mom fashion, she comes in with a tray with all of this precariously balanced, and laughs when she spots Bree.]
My, don't you look comfortable.

My, don't you look comfortable.
[They're... circular, and almost even to boot. The uglier ones are on Claire's plate. See, that's love. Setting down the tray and very carefully sitting down opposite Bree, she lifts a brow.]
My circles are fine, thank you very much. I'd like to see you do better.

[This is where a loving birthday text would be in lieu of a card.
You know, if Bree wasn't off in la la land, and Claire wasn't fretting herself into an early grave.]

[Once Claire feels they've spent too much time in the station, she urges Bree to stand so they can return to Nadril. She wants to take her home, to Olympia, but Jamie can't leave the city yet. So to the cold it is, back to the rooms they have at the inn. The more she sees Bree move, how gingerly and slow it is, the more she begins to suspect that terrible sinking feeling in her gut is correct.
It makes anger wash over her in a wave, want to demand to know what happened and who did it, but not yet. Bree needs to be safe and warm and loved, and Claire keeps a strong arm around her back the whole way. As they reach the door, she steps forward to open it for her.]
Let's get you in bed, sweetheart.

Aye, lass.
[ He looks at her, stunned, taking in her clothing and unable to find words. There's distress on her face, on Claire's, and he wants to close the space between them and wrap Brianna up.
So, he does.
Even as Jamie holds onto her, he looks over her shoulder at Claire, silently asking so many questions with one glance ]
Mo leanbh. It's all right now.

[Helplessly, Claire shakes her head. How does she explain what she thinks Bree's experienced, as well as that their daughter went through the stones to prevent their deaths?]
[ Jamie is all at once elated and stricken. His daughter is letting go of heaving tears in his arms and he can hold her, keep her safe, stroke her hair and whisper soft words to her. He does hold her, gauging where the bed is and sinking onto it as he rocks her just gently. ]
Yer all right now, Brianna. Safe and wi' us.
[ There's a tightening in his stomach of dread as one hand cradles the back of her head like something precious. ]

[Claire knows that Bree always found the most comfort in Frank. There's something between fathers and daughters, she supposes, and it breaks her heart to see it so plainly here. Jamie is a strong man, they all know it, and their daughter is seeking him for comfort and protection.
If only the circumstances were different.
Quietly, she sits beside them, putting a hand on Jamie's elbow. It's not good.]
We won't let anything happen to you, Bree. You're safe.
[So she hears it from both her parents.]

[ Jamie looks at the ring and loses all color in his face. He goes white as a sheet and reaches out with a shaking hand to take the ring from the palm of Brianna's hand. ]
A Dhia...
[ He knows in an instant. He knows it. The same man that terrorized his wife terrorized his child. ]

[Her ring. Claire looks down at the identical one on her hand. Jamie had told her about a man he helped, who in turn, attacked her and stole her wedding ring. He'd been so upset over it, even if it had been some time ago in his life, and not in hers at all.
Seeing Bree with it makes her blood run cold.
Claire doesn't say anything because she can piece it together well enough in her mind. Why her daughter is like this now. What sort of man she met. Abruptly, she grabs Bree to pull her close, her turn now to hold her.
She can't look at Jamie and so she squeezes her eyes shut against the tears that want to fall.]

[ Jamie's head is bowed, but when he looks back up he's crying, tears freely falling down his face as he reaches out to rub her back. ]
Much, mo naoidheachan, much.
[ He tries to soothe, tries to make it better, but he can't. Again. He can't. ]

[Christ. Christ. Claire feels her throat tighten, wanting to cry as well, but one of them has to hold it together. She knows how much this hurts Jamie. For a number of reasons. She risks a glance at him and regrets it. Oh, but she can't hold both of them right now.]
It's not your fault. There is nothing to apologize for, Bree. I won't hear it again.

[ Every word is like a knife slicing through his heart. A ring that shouldn't have been stolen from Claire to begin with. ]
Don't ever apologize again, Brianna.
[ His words are somewhat choked as he clears his throat. ]
One day I'll kill him. I swear it to ye, Bree.
[ It's all he can do, all he can offer. ]
