THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Brianna Randall
Series: Outlander (TV show canon)
Canon Point: Post season 3 finale, 'Eye of the Storm.' This is to consider that as much time has passed for Brianna as it has for her parents.
Character Age: 20.
Background: Wiki link.

Personality:

→ stubbornness ←

Stubbornness isn’t a trait Brianna gets solely from one side of the family - despite what any parent might think. Though, she does have a fiery temper once she’s set on something that she believes is right, almost to the point of not seeing the other side of an argument. To her, when there is overwhelming evidence swaying on her side of the debate, she wins and she has a hard time separating her emotions from the actual point. Never is this more clear than when Claire tries to tell Brianna about Jamie. Claire goes so far as to show Brianna her signature on a document from the 18th century, but it doesn’t matter; she accuses her mother of cheating, goes so far as to tell her mother that she fucked someone else while married (her literal words. Which. Ouch.) before wishing her mother was dead.

It takes seeing to believe in many cases for Bree, not so much a woman of faith as she is a woman of science even if she doesn’t know it yet. It’s only when she sees someone disappear through the stones the way her mother described that she actually believes any stories of time travel and lost loves. Luckily, when she can finally see the truth for what it is, she’ll back down and admit she was wrong, even going so far as to actually apologize. Eventually.

→ compassion ←

It may seem like too opposite of a trait from stubbornness, especially given everything she’s said and done and how she reacts to things, but this one is something she got from her mother, hands down. When she realizes someone is hurting, that they need help, Bree will often do whatever she can to make sure that person is okay. Large case in point: as soon as she realized her mother was telling the truth and actually hurt over the idea that her second husband might be alive out there somewhere, Brianna made up her mind to tell her mother to go back in time to him. She felt like she was grown enough to assure her mother that she could leave and be fairly confident that her daughter would be just fine.

In truth, as soon as Claire left, Brianna broke down in tears. It wasn’t so much that Claire was gone as it was, at age twenty, Bree wasn’t all that ready to let go of her mother. This wasn’t a simple move where a phone could be picked up to hear her mom’s voice again, she couldn’t get on a plane and take a trip to hug her. It hurts when it sinks in but it’s not something Bree would ever regret urging her mother to do. As much as Frank was the father that raised her, Jamie was the father Claire loved, and it was obvious in the way she simply said his name. And so, the right thing to do was make sure her mother could be truly happy again. The only way to do that was by Bree assuring her she could take care of herself.

→ lack of patience ←

This is a trait from both parents as well, the slight edge is given to Jamie. It also goes hand in hand with the first which may be a more telling sign as to who she got that from. When all she can do is sit idly by, Brianna gets frustrated easily, often snapping at someone else, or walking away from whatever she’s working on. It’s not often a moment of truly being angry or blaming anyone else for anything, but having too little to go on or not enough time to work something out. She also has no patience for outdated views that seem archaic, mostly in the vein of things being sexist. That part, she does get from one parent who was ahead of his time by 18th century standards and one parent who became a doctor despite the odds.

Bree’s lack of patience ironically comes with a sort of dogged determination. Once she runs out of patience and she’s running on sheer irritation, she doubles down. Because running out of patience means running out of time for other people’s bullshit. That actually makes this personality a double-header of sorts with the addition of persistence. Right, wrong, or indifferent, once she’s out to prove something she won’t let it go. Basically: exhaust her patience and be ready to have an argument about why you’re wrong. (Which she gets from Claire, hands down.)

→ who am I, inside? ←

This might be the biggest and most consistent thing Bree struggles with as soon as she comes to accept the truth about her parentage. She knows that Claire’s blood runs strongly through her and even says as much, but deep down, there will always be a question to her of whether the things she thought were Frank (her love of reading, history and old things) were really because of his influence in raising her, or if it was a byproduct of a father lost to history. Now she has to wonder; did Jamie love to read? Frank never really enjoyed being outdoors much just for the hell of it, he never really loved fishing and taking care of animals. But did Jamie? She has so many unanswered questions and she only has more the longer she thinks about the differences between her and Frank.

A part of her looks in the mirror now, sees her red hair, and wonders if it ever hurt Frank. If she was just a reminder that her mother didn’t love him at all. It makes her hurt to think, but another part of her sees the red hair and is so deeply curious. Which parts of Jamie made her? If he’d raised her, how different would she be from the woman she is now? Is she more Fraser by sheer default, or is she more Randall because of the man who raised her? She doesn’t know how to get this answer, exactly, but she wonders more often than not.
